RESUMO

Verifying habitats, including the foraging and nesting areas for sea turtles, enables an understanding of their spatial ecology and successful planning of their conservation and management strategies. Recently, the observation frequency and bycatch of loggerhead (Caretta caretta) and green (Chelonia mydas) turtles have increased in the northern limit of their distribution range, in the northern part of the East China Sea and East (Japan) Sea. We conducted satellite tracking to investigate the habitat use of seven loggerhead and eight green turtles from June 2016 to August 2022 in this area, where little is known about their spatial ecology. We applied a 50 percent volume contour method to determine their main foraging areas and analyzed 6 environmental variables to characterize their habitats. Loggerhead turtles mainly stayed in and used the East China Sea as a foraging area during the tracking period, while two individuals among them also used the East Sea as a seasonal foraging area. Most green turtles also used the East China Sea as a foraging area, near South Korea and Japan, with one individual among them using the lower area of the East Sea as a seasonal foraging area. Notably, one green turtle traveled to Hainan Island in the South China Sea, a historical nesting area. Our results showed that the two sea turtle species included the East Sea as a seasonal foraging area, possibly owing to the abundance of food sources available, despite its relatively lower sea temperature. Considering that loggerhead and green sea turtles were observed using the northern part of the East China Sea and East Sea more frequently than previously known and that the sea temperature gradually increases due to climate change, conservation and management activities are required for sea turtles in these areas.

The supply and sources of N and Hg in the Geum estuary of the western coast of Korea were evaluated. Triple isotope proxies (δ15NNO3, Δ17ONO3 and δ18ONO3) of NO3- combined with conservative mixing between river and ocean waters were used to improve isotope finger-printing methods. The N pool in the Geum estuary was primarily influenced by the Yellow Sea water, followed by riverine discharge (821 × 106 mol yr-1) and atmospheric deposition (51 × 106 mol yr-1). The influence of the river was found to be greater for Hg than that of the atmosphere. The triple isotope proxies revealed that the riverine and atmospheric inputs of N have been affected by septic wastes and fossil fuel burning, respectively. From the inner estuary towards offshore region, the influence of the river diminishes, thus increasing the relative impact of the atmosphere. Moreover, the isotope proxies showed a significant influence of N assimilation in February and nitrification in May.

Purpose: This research seeks to evaluate the repercussions of socioeconomic status (SES) on physical activity (PA) among the older population, both pre and intra-COVID-19 pandemic. The study aims to scrutinize whether alteration in PA behaviors based on SES impacts cardiovascular diseases (CVDs). It is well established that PA has a significant association with CVDs and the pandemic has restricted PA in the older population. We endeavor to discern whether SES modulates PA levels and whether these levels of PA behavior subsequently influence the incidence of CVDs among older adults. Methods: The analytical framework of this study relies on the data procured from the Fact-Finding on the Status of Senior Citizens (FSSSC) survey conducted in 2017 and 2020, involving 10,299 (75 ± 6 years) and 10,097 (74 ± 6 years) participants, respectively. We employ Structural Equation Modeling (SEM) to elucidate the ramification of the COVID-19 pandemic on CVDs while accommodating potential mediating and confounding variables, including socioeconomic status, PA levels, body mass index (BMI), and gender, in the context of the pandemic and CVDs. Results: Our empirical models indicated a tendency for older adults of lower socioeconomic status (SES) to exhibit diminished levels of physical activity (PA) compared to their counterparts of higher SES, particularly considering the influence of the COVID-19 pandemic. Furthermore, prolonged engagement in PA is associated with a reduced risk of hypertension (p = 0.010), and congestive heart failure & arrhythmia (p < 0.001), when accounting for confounding factors. Conclusion: The COVID-19 pandemic has generated an SES-based disparity in PA among older adults, despite PA time being greater in older individuals with higher SES. Interestingly, this did not result in a reduction in CVDs. Therefore, the study emphasizes the need for targeted exercise programs may be necessary to mitigate health inequality among the older population.

DNA-based analyses of bacterial communities were performed to identify the bacteria co-occurring with cyanobacterial blooms in samples collected at a single site over 2 years. Microcystis aeruginosa was the most predominant species (81% in 2018, and 94% in 2019) within the phylum Cyanobacteria, and microcystins were detected during all cyanobacterial blooms. The stereo microscope and scanning electron microscope observations showed bacterial associations on and around the aggregated M. aeruginosa cells. Culture-independent analyses of filtered bacterial communities showed that the Flavobacterium species in phylum Bacteroidetes (19%) was dominant in the cyanobacterial phycosphere, followed by the Limnohabitans species in Betaproteobacteria (11%). Using principal component analysis, major bacterial genus, including Microcystis and Flavobacterium species, were clustered during cyanobacterial blooms in both years. To identify key bacterial species that develop long-term symbiosis with M. aeruginosa, another culture-independent analysis was performed after the environmental sample had been serially subcultured for 1 year. Interestingly, Brevundimonas (14%) was the most dominant species, followed by Porphyrobacter (7%) and Rhodobacter (3.5%) within the Alphaproteobacteria. Screening of 100 colonies from cyanobacterial bloom samples revealed that the majority of culturable bacteria belonged to Gammaproteobacteria (28%) and Betaproteobacteria (57%), including Pseudomonas, Curvibacter, and Paucibacter species. Several isolates of Brevundimonas, Curvibacter, and Pseudomonas species could promote the growth of axenic M. aeruginosa PCC7806. The sensitivity of M. aeruginosa PCC7806 cells to different environmental conditions was monitored in bacteria-free pristine freshwater, indicating that nitrogen addition promotes the growth of M. aeruginosa.

RESUMO

The complete mitochondrial genome of the highly venomous blue-lined octopus, Hapalochlaena fasciata (Hoyle, 1886), was analyzed by the primer walking method. Its mitogenome was 15,479 bp in total length, comprising 13 protein-coding genes, 2 ribosomal RNA genes, and 23 transfer RNA genes. In the phylogenetic tree, the gene content and order were congruent with those of typical octopodiform species. The mitogenomic sequence presented could be very useful as the first record of the complete mitogenome for the genus Hapalochlaena.

OBJECTIVES: We assessed the spatial distribution of subsidized housing units provided through 2 federally supported, low-income housing programs in Orange County, California, in relation to neighborhood walkability, transit access, and traffic exposure. METHODS: We used data from multiple sources to examine land-use and health-related built environment factors near housing subsidized through the Housing Choice Voucher Program and the Low Income Housing Tax Credit (LIHTC) program, and to determine these patterns' associations with traffic exposure. RESULTS: Subsidized projects or units in walkable, poorer neighborhoods were associated with lower traffic exposure; higher traffic exposure was associated with more transit service, a Hispanic majority, and mixed-use areas. Voucher units are more likely than LIHTC projects to be located in high-traffic areas. CONCLUSIONS: Housing program design may affect the location of subsidized units, resulting in differential traffic exposure for households by program type. Further research is needed to better understand the relationships among subsidized housing locations, characteristics of the built environment, and health concerns such as traffic exposure, as well as which populations are most affected by these relationships.
